Barrington Bear on Safari
by Keith Szafranski
Ages 4-8 48 pages Small Bear Publishing October 2008 Hardcover

Barrington Bear (a stuffed teddy bear) goes on safari to Africa. At Nairobi airport, he is met by Sokwe, his Kenyan guide (a stuffed chimp). Sokwe teaches Barrington to speak Swahili, the common language of East Africa (for instance, Sokwe addresses him as Bwana, which means Mister).

Sokwe takes Barrington to the Nairobi National Park just outside the city. Here they see zebras, black rhinos (common in the park but rare elsewhere in Africa), and a lone giraffe against a brilliant orange evening sky. Along the way, Barrington learns the Swahili terms for hello (jambo) and okay (sawa sawa).

The next morning, Barrington and Sokwe drive to Masai Mara Reserve, where Barrington spots a pride of lions (samba in Swahili), a gray-headed kingfisher, and a herd of wildebeests. He gets to run and play with a young twiga, or giraffe. Barrington even visits a Masai village and gets to pose in a Masai warrior’s gear and mask.

This is the second book in a series that features travels with Barrington Bear. Photographer and author Keith Szafranski’s many gorgeous images illustrate the book. The photos of Barrington posing next to a lion cub and in Masai warrior gear are cute, and the nature photography is lovely. A map of the world showing Barrington’s trip, a quiz on animal body parts, and a glossary of words are nice touches.

This book will make a good addition to any school library, and to the collections of children interested in learning about animals in the wild.
