Bedtime!
by Christine Anderson, illustrated by Steven Salerno
Ages 4-8 32 pages Philomel June 2005 Hardcover

Getting a small child to go to bed on time is like getting, well, a small child to go to bed on time. In other words, it’s not easy. But with this delightful book by Christine Anderson, parents just might succeed with a little creativity and imagination.

Little Melanie just doesn’t want to go to bed. She’s got far more important things to do, like build a huge tower so big that elephants could play inside it. So she stalls and stalls as her frustrated mom tries to get her to take a bath, brush teeth and kiss daddy goodnight. And when Melanie just won’t budge, mom takes matters into her own hands in a most hilarious way. After all, mom is just as determined that SOMEBODY goes to bed on time as Melanie is determined to NOT to.

The end result will make kids laugh out loud, even as they are rushing off to brush their teeth. And it will no doubt make parents smile, as they realize that sometimes all it takes is a little child psychology and a cute, fluffy dog.

Steven Salerno’s whimsical illustrations are a visual treat for kids who like bright, bold colors. Christine Anderson claims Bedtime! is a true story, and for her first children’s book, she succeeds at creating a fun and memorable story that will make going to bed all the more enjoyable for any child.
