The Best Birthday Party Ever
by Jennifer Larue Huget, illustrated by LeUyen Pham
Ages 4+ 40 pages Schwartz and Wade February 2011 Hardcover

A little girl starts counting down to her birthday—which is "5 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, and 8 hours away." Her plans for the party include 57 guests (some of whom she has only just met at the store) and nine thousand pink balloons.

As the big day approaches, the girl's dreams for the perfect party get evermore elaborate, featuring a cake so tall and with so many candles that ladders and firemen are a must. The perfect party must feature camels, elephants, real castles, and magicians and bunnies, of course. Parades, fighter jets, fireworks, the President, and the Queen of England will all be involved in this birthday celebration.

When the real birthday arrives, the girl is thrilled with what she really does get: a party at home with balloons, steamers, and napkins all in pink, a two-layer chocolate cake, and the perfect surprise present. Now all she needs to do is start planning for her next birthday party!

The Best Birthday Party Ever is a sweet and funny take on a child's eager anticipation of her birthday. The girl's over-the-top dreams are hilarious and touching, and I am glad to see that she is not disappointed in the end by the more down-to-Earth party she does get. The artwork by LeUyen Pham adds just the right touch of sly and gentle humor to the story.
