Big Horse Small Mouse: A Book of Barnyard Opposites
by Liesbet Slegers
Ages 1-3 32 pages Clavis September 2015 Hardcover

Slegers’ (Quiet Koala Noisy Monkey: A Book of Jungle Opposites) other 2015 book about opposites features farm animals enjoying a sunny day on the farm.

There is a rabbit who eats carrots until it’s bedtime (daytime/nighttime) and a pair of identical looking piglets who dive head first into a huge mud puddle (clean/dirty). A mommy chicken watches as her chicks hatch (one/many), and outside by the fruit trees, a mouse slides down a horse’s back (small/big).

After a cat and dog demonstrate good and naughty by spilling a bucket of water because they were chasing each other, the sun is chased away by a storm cloud and a rainbow appears above the farm (sun/rain). This is not a rhyming book, but children will have fun opening the flaps on the right hand page to make a new picture.

The pairs of opposites appear in bold type, and the one or two sentences that appear on the page are short.
Hello piglets, you are pretty pink and clean!
But you like it much more when you’re in the mud getting dirty!
Although the pages are brightly colored, I find the primary colors stand out on the page the most. The yellow sun and bucket or the blue bird and red flower that are found in the background really catch my eye.

The simple concepts and thick, glossary pages make this a suitable book for a toddler storytime.
