by Richard Scarry
Ages 2-6 69 pages Golden Press January 2014 Hardcover

This re-issued edition celebrates the 40th anniversary of Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. Although the cover is new, children can enjoy the original characters (Officer Flossy, Goldbug, Dingo Dog) and story from the past.

Classified as a “point-and-look” story, the details in this book, both text and illustrations, make everyday life exciting and interesting. As the pig family travels to their picnic destination, they escape rolling watermelons, changes in the weather, an accident involving mustard, tomato juice and bananas, and lots of construction and traffic.

After a small scene is described (Ma and Pa and Pickles and Penny Pig are going on a picnic. Here comes Ma with the picnic basket. Please hurry up, Ma), children can look around and see an auto-plane flying in the sky, a cat delivering the mail, a mouse driving a tow truck, and a garbage truck with a face. All are labeled. Children can read the words under each vehicle and the letters on the signs and stores.

Humor and silliness and imagination abound on every double-page spread. I could definitely include this book in every children’s library.
