Chick's Works of Art
by Thierry Robberecht, illustrated by Loufane
Ages 3-5 30 pages Clavis Publishing December 2012 Hardcover

Chick has a hard time suppressing her creativity while working in the egg factory. Instead of making white, oval-shaped eggs, hers have colors, patterns and unique shapes.

Her bosses (the foxes) may not appreciate her hard work (after they smash her egg, they fire her), but a well-dressed goose named Leonora calls Chick’s eggs “works of art” and offers her a studio. . After Chick becomes famous for her painted eggs, she shows Leonora her newest “project.” With tears in her eyes, Chick introduces her friend to all her beautiful baby chicks.

This picture book, originally published in Dutch in 2011, teaches children about resilience, individuality, and creation. Read it aloud for story times about eggs, chickens art, or mothers. If shared before Easter, it may inspire children to create some wild-looking Easter eggs of their own.
