Grades K-2 32 pages Kane/Miller August 2005 Hardcover

Madame Coco lives with her five white dogs - Nico, Fanny, Claude, Daisy and Rose. It has been raining and raining, and the dogs are bored. What can they do to amuse themselves? They decide to host a costume party and award a prize for the best costume.

Since none of Madame Coco’s costumes fit the dogs, they opt to make new costumes. Finally the day of the longed-for party arrives, and the dogs and their owner celebrate in style.

The droll art and amusing expressions on the faces of the dogs and Madame Coco are well done, but the story is too simple and uninteresting to take up quite so much text. The tongue-in-cheek, deadpan style of storytelling will be lost on most young children.

While the book may particularly appeal to pet owners with multiple dogs, the graphic depiction of dogs defecating in one scene may well put off some readers.
