Creature ABC

These two board books (by the creator of the beautiful photography books Creature and Creature ABC) are part of a series that also includes Creature Baby Animals and Creature Sounds. Each double-page spread displays a color photograph of an animal and one or two words. There is no clutter on the page, only a stark white background.

Creature Numbers includes the numbers one through ten. They appear as digits only (1,2,3, and so on) but in a variety of colors. The animals that appear next to the numbers are actively performing an activity they would do in the wild. The kangaroo jumps, the tigers play, and the chimpanzees run. There is one humorous page (6 sheared sheep) and an opportunity to review counting and identifying the animals on the last page; all of which are in different positions and sizes then seen previously in the book.

Creature Colors contains ten colorful animals such as a seahorse, a bear, a snake and a variety of birds. The only word on each page is the color name (red, brown, pink, gray), and the letters of that word are filled in with a color to match its name. The animals are not labelled. The close-up views are meant to amaze the reader, but the bear who appears to be waving at us adds humor to the book.

If you want children to develop a love for animals, these are the perfect books to share with them.
