The Day Roy Riegels Ran the Wrong Way
by Dan Gutman, illustrated by Kerry Talbott
Ages 4-8 40 pages Bloomsbury USA October 2011 Hardcover

Have you ever run the wrong way in a sports game? You were probably disappointed and a little bit embarrassed, right? It even happened to me one time!

People probably told you over and over that “Everybody makes mistakes sometimes.” That’s exactly the way Roy Riegels felt the day he ran the wrong way in a college football game in 1929.

This account, based on a true story, features a grandfather and his grandson reliving the moment. Follow Roy Riegels on his road from fame to utter dismay, when he finds that his mistake could cost his team, the California Golden Bears, a chance to play in “the granddaddy of them all”: the Rose Bowl.

The Day Roy Riegels Ran the Wrong Way is a good book for football fans of all ages. Gutman’s play-by-play analysis of the game in this children’s picture book had me yelling into the book for Roy to turn around too. Hike to the nearest bookstore for this one, it’s a real winner.
