A flying squirrel and a young self-described cynic named Flora Belle Buckman become fast friends after an unfortunate incident that involves a vacuum cleaner with remarkable suction. When the out-of-control piece of advanced technology sucks up Ulysses, the squirrel, it appears that the little critter has survived the ordeal with only the loss of some hair.
Well, that’s not totally correct. Ulysses now seems able to talk, and he also has discovered a strange passion for writing poetry. Flora and her furry new friend form a partnership that will take them into some precarious situations. Fortunately, the squirrel’s remarkable skills and the fountain of knowledge found in Flora’s three favorite books, (Terrible Things Can Happen to You!, The Criminal Element Is Among Us and The Illuminated Adventures of the Amazing Incandesto!) will enable this dynamic duo to overcome all the challenges they encounter.
The supporting cast of characters, including neighbors and Flora’s parents, are as amusing and endearing as Flora and Ulysses, so this zany tale will generate plenty of laughter.
The format of the chapter book combines comic-style graphic sequences and full-page illustrations with an amusing narrative. Kate DiCamillo has authored some award-winning books like The Tale of Despereaux and the Mary Watson series. Flora and Ulysses, which has neeted DiCamillo her second Newbery, will delight young readers as much as these previous works did.
