What a Good Big Brother!
by Diane Wright Landolf, illustrated by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher
Ages 3-6 40 pages Random House January 2009 Hardcover

Cameron loves his baby sister, Sadie - he loves to pat her head, rub her tummy and kiss her sweet little toes. When Sadie cries because she needs a diaper change, Cameron hands his father some diaper wipes for cleaning her. When Sadie cries because she’s tired, Cameron rubs her tummy until she falls asleep. When Sadie cries from hunger, Cameron ran to fetch her nursing pillow so that his mom can feed her.

Cameron is a good big brother, eager to lend a helping hand while his parents comfort Sadie as she cries. But when Sadie cries and cries and cries but doesn’t need to be fed, changed, picked up, put down, walked, rocked or sung to, Cameron is the only one who is able to elicit a smile from the baby.

What a Good Big Brother! is a sweet and engaging tale by Diane Wright Landoff, a tender and gently humorous depiction of a young boy’s relationship with a baby sister who clearly both mystifies and enthralls him. The artwork is by the husband-and-wife team of Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher, who have illustrated over forty books including Dr. Suess’s My Many Colored Days. Their illustrations form the perfect complement to the text: realistic, charming, and sweet without being cloying. Perfect for a child practicing to be a good older sibling.
