Ages 5-9 32 pages Candlewick February 2007 Paperback

A mix of factual information and compelling story, Grandma Elephant's in Charge is a great choice for the picture book lover in your family. The story is part of the Read & Wonder Candlewick Press series, which includes other titles such as Think of an Eel and Surprising Sharks. As it's written by Martin Jenkins, a conservation biologist, you don’t have to worry about its accuracy. The book is recommended for ages 5-9, but Ivan Bates’ realistic and beautiful watercolor pictures make it appealing to younger children as well.

Grandma Elephant's in Charge chronicles the story of elephant herds – from the newest calves all the way through to the leader of the pack: Grandma Elephant. All the other elephants listen to and appreciate her wisdom, since she’s been around long enough to know all the important stuff: the location of the water holes and juiciest melons, or when to run away and when to charge. Informal word choice and likeable drawings make this a great pick for beginning readers, and the moral of the tale, that age can bring certain wisdom, is sure to be appreciated by parents and grandparents.
