Happy Easter!
by Liesbet Slegers
Ages 2-4 30 pages Clavis Publishing April 2012 Hardcover

Although this new picture book by Belgian author and illustrator Slegers (the Kevin and Katie series) contains the sights and sounds of spring—
“Flowers rise from the soil/
birds chirp happily to welcome their babies/
children make crafts to celebrate Easter”
—the Easter Bunny is the main focus. In this story, the friendly, brown bunny prepares for Easter morning by decorating and delivering the eggs he gathers from his chicken coop. When the basket he carries on his shoulder is empty, he goes back to his house in the woods for a long sleep.

The brother and sister who appear in the book celebrate Easter by searching outside for the hidden eggs and dressing up in new spring outfits. Simple line drawings and visible brush strokes add a childlike look to the artwork. The bright greens, oranges, reds and blues that appear in the illustrations are also used in the backgrounds behind the text.

Parents and teachers looking for an Easter book with a non-religious tone may want to select this book.
