How to Be a Good Cat
by Gail Page
Ages 3-5 32 pages Bloomsbury USA November 2011 Hardcover

When Bobo the dog helps Mrs.Birdhead with her chores, the cleaning is so thorough that the strawberries get dusted off the cake and the floor is swept until it’s spotless. But when he volunteers to help Mr. Hiccup with his kitten, the results are disastrous.

Bonkers prefers clawing and shredding to sitting and fetching. Bobo is determined to turn the naughty kitten into a well-behaved pet, though, so he asks an expert to teach him some tricks about cat behavior. Bonkers proves to be a good student when the new lessons are taught, but when it’s time to stop for the day, she teaches Bobo how to do something new: curl up in a comfortable chair for a cat nap.

Despite their differences, the cats and dog in this story learn to respect and accept each other. Page’s (How to be a Good Dog, Bobo and the New Neighbor) acrylic illustrations are uncluttered and large in size. Long limbs appear on all the characters except Bonkers.

How to Be a Good Cat makes a quick, entertaining read-aloud for a story time about cats and dogs or helpers.
