Kindergarten Cat
by J. Patrick Lewis, illustrated by Ailie Busby
Grades PreK-K 40 pages Schwartz and Wade July 2010 Hardcover

A caretaker finds a homeless cat by the school jungle gym and takes it to the kindergarten classroom, where the “shivery scared” critter is promptly adopted by the kids and given the name Tinker Toy. The children eagerly share their circle time spots with Tinker Toy, who soon becomes a regular member of the group.

She even has the purr-fect answers to each question asked of her! She accurately identifies the cat in the drawing --- “ME-ow.” In response to a poem about a rabbit who fell off a bed, she commiserates, “Me-OW!”. What goes perfectly together? “ME-YOU”. With a class cat like this, what kindergartener could ask for more?

Kindergarten Cat is a warm and appealing story of a sweet orange tabby and energetic young children playing together, ably rendered in mixed-media illustrations.
