Let's Make Faces
by Hanoch Piven
Ages 3-8 40 pages Atheneum August 2013 Hardcover

Hanoch Piven’s (What Presidents are Made Of) newest picture book prompts readers to create expressive faces out of everyday objects. Double-page spreads display a variety of photographed foods, tools, leaves and sticks: “Look closely at these fruits and vegetables. What more can you see?”

Following pages show the objects being used for eyes, noses, mouths, ears and hair. Seashells and a slipper make a sleepy face. A monster face is created with a hook nose, studded eyebrows and Scrabble tile teeth. At the end of the book, “Now it’s your turn. Let’s make faces!”

Parents and teachers can refer to the seven steps on the last two pages for additional help. The bright colors complement the author’s message— “Oh, and always remember… have fun!” This book helps children think outside the box.
