*The Magic in You!* by Sally H. Taylor
The Magic in You!
by Sally H. Taylor
Ages 4-8 40 pages Outskirts Press May 2007 Paperback

In the early days of summer, deep in the forest, wildflowers bloom profusely. There are so many of them that the sun shimmers from their petals. But as the summer ends and becomes fall, many of the wildflowers go back to the earth. This is when one seed from one wildflower is picked up by a bird and transported out of the forest to the side of the road.

In the spring, the single wildflower blooms in the bright sunlight that once shimmered off the leaves of wildflowers like her. However, this single wildflower feels unlovely and lonely because she is the only wildflower in this place, and other plants make fun of her. An encounter with a rude car and a nibbling billy goat spoil her beauty until she is reminded by a fairy that beauty comes from within. Through acts of kindness and a forgiving heart, the wildflower finds her inner beauty.

Designed in a picture book format, the story is presented on each page in the midst of watercolor drawings. In the style of Shel Silverstein’s Giving Tree, this is also a picture book for adults. There is great depth of meaning here layered below the simple story about a wildflower. The price stated, though, seems to be a bit inflated for a softcover with fewer than 50 pages.
