Man Gave Names to All the Animals
by Bob Dylan, illustrated by Jim Arnosky
Grades PreK-2 32 pages Sterling September 2010 Hardcover

Leave it to illustrator Jim Arnosky to take an obscure Dylan tune and turn it into a children’s book. Arnosky is an accomplished artist who has illustrated many books about animals and nature. Indeed, the vivid images in this tale are what will keep a child’s attention.

If you’re not familiar with the song itself, it is from Dylan’s Slow Train Coming album, released in 1979. Repetition in a song makes it easy to sing along; repetition as words from an author becomes tedious to read.

The book comes with a CD of the Dylan song. As a parent and Bob Dylan fan, it is fun to hear my son and daughter learn and love one of his songs. Message to Jim Arnosky: when you illustrate “Highway 61 Revisited” or “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” let us know. Otherwise, you could probably pass on Animals.
