Minnie's Diner: A Multiplying Menu
by Dayle Ann Dodds, illustrated by John Manders
Ages 5-8 40 pages Candlewick July 2007 Paperback

I was actually laughing out loud as I read this charming book intended to introduce young children to multiplication. Do not share this characterization with young readers, however, because alluding to math might deter them from selecting the book. That would be an unfortunate consequence, since Minnie's Diner is such an entertaining story.

When a young boy smells the enticing food served in Minnie’s Diner, he heads there to order the special - soup, salad, sandwich, fries, and hot cherry pie. Others follow his lead, and each orders a double order of what the previous patron enjoyed. As the customers enter the diner one by one, the amount of food multiplies as the overwhelmed waitress tries to keep up with their demands.

Minnie's Diner is a wonderful story book that serves up the dual purpose of educating and entertaining. It should be earmarked as a “special”, just like the menu item in the story that draws such a large crowd.
