Tullet (Press Here!) has created another fun, interactive book about colors and dots.
In this book, the first dot to press is gray (not yellow). When the page is turned, the yellow dot appears, surrounded by a number of other dots (blue, red, and pink). Subsequent taps of the grey dot make more colors appear (green, purple, and orange). Place your hand on the page, close your eyes, and count to five. When the page is turned, a white handprint looks as if it has been stamped on all the colors. Then the reader is encouraged to “mix it up” by touching two different colors at once to make a new color, or by tilting, shaking, or closing the book to make colors combine into a new color.
The author cheers the reader on with exclamations of “Bravo!” and “Right on!” There are even two pages devoted to making colors lighter (applying white) or darker (applying black). The splotches of paint used in the illustrations show textures, cracks, streaks, dribbles and smudges. They look really bright against the white backgrounds.
I read this story to a group of children ages 2-5 at the library, and they couldn’t stay in their seats. They were constantly coming up to touch and name the colors.
