There Are No Cats in This Book
by Viviane Schwarz
Grades PreK-3 32 pages Candlewick September 2010 Hardcover

Don’t be misled by this title - there are plenty of cats in this picture book. Tiny, Moonpie and Andre want to go off and explore the world, but first the three felines must find a way of getting off the pages of this book. They try pushing their way out, but that doesn’t work. The three try to jump off the page, but again - no dice!

What can they do? How about wishing themselves out? With the young reader’s help, that just might work. In fact, as some empty pages in the center of the book verify, that does work. The cats are gone! But not for long. Soon they are back, and they have a big surprise for the reader: they return with all the new friends they made while they were gone.

This interactive volume has a few fold-out and pop-up pages, making it fun to read. The story is constructed around a silly premise, but it actually is sort of humorous (and preschoolers will probably think it is hilarious). You might think of some clever ways of filling the “blank” pages, too. Give your child a pencil or crayon and see what he or she comes up with!
