Oh No, Not Ghosts!
by Richard Michelson, illustrated by Adam McCauley
Grades 1-3 44 pages Harcourt September 2006 Hardcover

The perfect book for some spooky Halloween reading, Oh No, Not Ghosts! by Richard Michelson is an entertaining read with plenty of scary illustrations by Adam McCauley to delight children in the five years and up range. A brother and sister are supposed to be going to sleep, but the sister keeps imagining she sees or hears scary monsters. Her brother doesn’t help matters by telling her he’ll scare away said monster with something even scarier, causing his sister to then become frightened of the new monster her brother has just told her about.

In rhyming verse, the brother causes mounting tension for his sister…though he may just be trying to soothe her fears. This would be an especially good book to read to siblings so they can see how the brother tries to help his younger sister yet doesn’t often have the desired results. It could result in a good discussion about letting your imagination run wild, or how older siblings need to be careful of their younger brother’s or sister’s feelings.

While illustrator Adam McCauley’s pictures are spooky, they should not be too scary for young children, and older children will likely be very entertained by them. This is a good book for kids who might imagine a “monster under the bed” or for those who just want some Halloween fun.
