*Old MacDonald Had a Farm (Little Golden Book)* by Anne Kennedy
Old MacDonald Had a Farm (Little Golden Book)
by Anne Kennedy
Ages 2-5 24 pages Golden Books January 2013 Hardcover

Sing along as Old MacDonald cares for his animals. After visiting the mother hen and her chicks in the barn, he delivers food to the turkeys and pigs with the help of his horses.

The animals are happy when they see Old MacDonald. He is greeted with moos and licks when he tries to milk the cows, and excited hee-haws from the donkeys when he stops to rest for the day.

As the song closes, Old MacDonald is getting ready for bed. As each animal noise is repeated for the final time (Here a baa, there a baa, everywhere a baa-baa/ With a hee-haw here, and a hee-haw there), the animals get themselves ready for bed—in Old MacDonald’s house!

Anne Kennedy’s illustrations are humorous and lively. When the animals race toward Old MacDonald, they often have their tongues out and their mouths open. Old MacDonald is dressed in blue overalls and a green baseball hat. He keeps his hair gray and his mustache long. The farm animals show their more ‘human-like’ side when they enter the farmhouse at night.

This book could be read at bedtime, because the story ends with everyone tucked into Old MacDonald’s bed, or during a story time featuring books that can be sung. A page of sheet music appears at the back of the book.
