When Olivia notices how many people compliment her mother at the grocery store when they see Baby William, she decides she wants the same attention.
Rather than "borrow" her little brother, Olivia makes the family cat and dog her babies.
The plan works at first: Olivia dresses the animals in baby clothes and takes them out for a walk in a stroller. Mamma Olivia basks in the limelight as her babies elicit comments from strangers, like "Isn't that baby cute?" and “a vision of loveliness."
Not surprisingly, Olivia soon discovers that being a mother also involves a lot of responsibility, especially when one's babies misbehave or are not happy. By story's end, Olivia has changed her mind about playing mommy and decides she'd rather wait until she is older before she assumes that responsibility.
A cute story, Olivia and the Babies is another in the lengthening list of picture books that feature this famous little pig (this one adapted from the animated television series). This particular story has a message that won't be lost on most mothers, who will appreciate Olivia's realization that motherhood is certainly no cakewalk!
