Ollie the Purple Elephant (Read to a Child!: Level 2)
by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Ages 2-7 40 pages Knopf October 2011 Hardcover

This is the story of Ollie, a homeless purple elephant that is taken in by the McLaughlin family. Ollie’s days are suddenly filled with play and his nights filled with music and dance as the new family celebrates life together.

Everyone is content – except for Ginger, the family cat, and the downstairs neighbor, Mr. Puddlebottom. One day, Ginger visits Mr. Puddlebottom, and the two hatch a plan to get rid of Ollie by convincing him that the McLaughlins no longer love Ollie, but intend to send him packing with the circus that is coming through town.

When Ollie joins the circus, it looks like Mr. Puddlebottom and Ginger have won, but there are some surprises and happy reunions still in store for everyone.

Author and illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka has created a simple but sweet and evocative tale with themes of friendship, family, love and loyalty, as well as consequences for bad behavior. The large, colorful, full-page illustrations effective convey the range of emotions in the story, from expressions of happiness to Ginger and Mr. Puddlebottom’s sinister grins as they conspire against the sweet-natured Ollie.

Ollie the Purple Elephant (Read to a Child!: Level 2) is a charming story that will appeal to a child’s sense of right and wrong. Perfect for ages 2 – 7 years. Five stars.
