Ages 4-8 32 pages Tricycle Press August 2011 Hardcover

How much trouble can One Little Chicken be? That’s what Leora thinks when a stray chicken appears in her yard.

Leora’s family isn’t wealthy and the idea of fresh eggs to eat is motivation enough for her, but her mother reminds her: “Finders aren’t keepers. This chicken isn’t our chicken.”

All the same, Leora and her father choose to take good care of the little chicken until her owner shows up. Before you know it, that chicken leads to one little goat, and another little goat, and…

One Little Chicken is based on a story from the Talmud about Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa, who closely followed the teachings in the Torah—including the instruction to return lost items to the rightful owner. The charming folk art illustrations are a delight in themselves, and the teaching story strikes a light but memorable note for young readers who will be enchanted by Elka Weber’s retelling of an ancient tale.
