Penguin in Love

Ages 3-6 40 pages Walker December 2012 Hardcover

Yoon’s (Penguin and Pinecone; Penguin on Vacation) newest Penguin book is about finding happiness.

Penguin and Bootsy are two lonely penguins who like to knit. When Penguin goes out in the snow searching for love with his telescope and magnifying glass, all he finds is a lost mitten. While looking for the mitten’s owner, he begins a knitting project of his own.

When two cold puffins receive his homemade gift, they decide to thank him by leading him to Bootsy—the creator of the lost mitten. The lost mitten turns out to be a snout cozy for a seal, but the journey Penguin and Bootsy embark on allows them to get to know one another during good and bad times. By the end of the book they are no longer lonely, and their friend the whale is no longer cold.

This is a cute read for Valentine’s Day. After reading this book, older children could try finger-knitting.
