Pomelo Explores Color (Pomelo the Garden Elephant)
by Ramona Badescu, illustrated by Benjamin Chaud
Ages 2-5 120 pages Enchanted Lion October 2012 Hardcover

When everything (including himself) seems “black and white” to Pomelo the elephant, he looks around and realizes there is color everywhere. A new appreciation for color emerges as he notices “the foamy white of cold milk,” “the speeding orange of shredded carrots” and the “happy gray of rain.”

After he gives several examples of each color, the illustrations help introduce the next colour (the white of an eye appears next to the white of an egg; each object is the same shape; Pomelo stops talking about white and begins to notice yellow).

At times, the book is unconventional is both text and artwork (the experimental orange of experimental grass/ the protective pink of pink lettuce) but it adds interest and humor to the page. Children will likely want to correct the “mistake,” and this helps them learn their colors. Pomelo’s friends from Pomelo’s Opposites (snail, frog, bee) all make an appearance in this book as well.

This is a concept book even older children can enjoy.
