Punk Farm
by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Preschool-Grade 2 40 pages Knopf April 2005 Hardcover

Things aren’t always as they seem on the farm. Farmer Joe works diligently throughout the day. By nightfall, he’s ready for a well-deserved evening of rest.

That’s when things heat up in the barn. It seems several of Farmer Joe’s barnyard creatures are animals by day and rock stars at night. Five energetic animals showcase their talents performing nightly concerts in the barn. Sheep baas on lead vocals, pig pumps up the volume as lead guitarist. On bass, goat sets a smooth beat, chicken pecks at the keyboard, and cow pounds out the drum line.

Herds of animals wait in line for concert tickets, and when the lights go down, Punk Farm rocks the house - or should I say "barn". The group’s rendition of "Old MacDonald had a Farm" has the animals on their feet, cheering for an encore.

Will Farmer Joe hear the strains of the steel guitar, or will he sleep through the music?

Punk Farm will delight young readers, not only with its concise storytelling but through the visual elements as well. From the front cover to the back endsheet, Punk Farm is a vibrant celebration of color. Endsheets feature concert goodies: pics of the band, concert stubs, the band’s website address, and a promotional flyer. The symphony of colors grabs the reader’s attention, and font choices give the book a “punk” feel. Even famous publications give Punk Farm two thumbs up!

Punk Farm is a rockin’ good read.
