Shake My Sillies Out (Raffi Songs to Read)
by Raffi, illustrated by David Allender
Ages 4-8 32 pages Crown December 1988 Paperback

The nighttime hush of Mariposa Forest is broken by a tiny "Tee-hee" that quickly escalates into giggles and full belly laughs. A fox pokes his head out from behind a tree and shouts, "Will you guys go to sleep?"

The wide-awake brown bear, rabbit and squirrel are too full of giddy energy to be quiet and still just yet. They need to shake their sillies out, clap their crazies out, and jump their jiggles out before they'll be ready to yawn their sleepies out, and they're taking the kids at Camp Mariposa along for the bedtime romp.

The head camp counselor (using a rotary phone attached to a tree) calls the police, fire department and park rangers in a panic. But when the authorities do arrive, they immediately join the spirited hijinx. Eventually even the camp counselors find the shaking, clapping and jumping too hard to resist. By song's (and book's) end, everyone is finally tuckered out enough to go to sleep.

David Allender's simple, stylized pen and watercolor illustrations capture and multiply the gotta-dance vibe of Raffi's lyrics and tune (the melodic notation is included at the end of the book for parents who might not yet be familiar with the song), making this a useful wind-down tool for parents whose kids might be feeling a little too hyper to crawl into bed when the time comes.
