Horace and Morris Say Cheese (Which Makes Dolores Sneeze!)
by James Howe, illustrated by Amy Walrod
Grades K-2 32 pages Atheneum October 2010 Hardcover

Horace, Morris and Dolores all love cheese. They’ll eat anything with cheese in it, and any type of cheese from Roquefort to Muenster. Then, one day, Dolores comes down with spots on her face and a bad case of sneezing. What’s this? Yup, it’s an allergy to her favorite food – cheese.

How Dolores copes with the problem is the subject of this humorous picture book which shows that if you develop an allergy to something you really like, it isn’t the end of the world.

After a few missteps, Dolores discovers that “there is more to life than just cheese.” Or, putting it another way, she finds some substitutes for her favorite food that do, indeed, taste just as yummy. Lo and behold, even her friends get hooked on the cheese-free snacks!

A fun book which shows how resourceful a youngster can be (with a little help, of course) in overcoming an obstacle that seems to be quite insurmountable, Horace and Morris Say Cheese (Which Makes Dolores Sneeze!) is an excellent story for reading aloud and which young readers can tackle without too much frustration. Mom or Dad may have to lend a hand with words like “fromage” and “gorgonzola,” but they aren’t really essential to understanding what’s happening here.
