The second book in The Sons of Libertygraphic novel series, The Sons of Liberty, Book 2: Death and Taxes takes historical events and figures to create a dark tale about two runaway slaves who gain superpowers, earn their freedom from slavery, and anonymously battle injustices and their misunderstood intentions. Though this book works somewhat as a stand-alone, many of the story elements are lost and the full impact missed without reading the first book.

Ex-slaves turned misunderstood heroes Graham and Brody continue their adventures. Graham seeks Isabelle, the lovet he left years ago on the plantation from which he escaped. In the backdrop, the British and Americans are fighting, Graham and Brody are still being called “Demons,” and their intentions so misunderstood that even Benjamin Franklin is considering whether or not he should turn them in to protect the citizens.

The panels are, for the most part, larger than in book one, but rest of the themes and layout, colors and images are familiarly effective – dark, powerful and action-filled, evocative images to complement the violent, graphic and disturbing, fast-paced storyline. Though the ending does reach a resolution, it can be read as open-ended, allowing for the story to continue.

This is another high-impact graphic novel from the Sons of Liberty team. Due to the graphic nature of the subject and images, this book is probably suitable for teens aged fourteen and up and should not be read as a factually accurate historical read. Five stars.
