Grades 9+ 240 pages Delacorte July 2009 Hardcover

For a book that is entertaining and warm-hearted in its portrayal of summer love, look no further than the funny, charming novel The Sweet Life of Stella Madison by Lara Zeises. It’s the story of one girl’s summer of food, friendship, and the confusion of a double attraction to two eligible bachelors vying for her attention and affection.

Teenager Stella Madison has a bit of a crush on the new intern at her parents’ restaurant, The Open Kitchen. But Stella already has a boyfriend who uses the L-word, so she’s trying hard to ignore her obvious feelings for the oh-so-hot Jeremy. Needless to say, having one boyfriend who adores you and a 21-year-old who flirts with you when you’re in high school makes you the target of lots of teasing from your two best friends. And, you’ve just been offered an internship at the local newspaper, so don’t expect your summer to be boring!

What Stella wants most of all is to be focused, to not be a “bubbleheaded, boy crazy, bouncy rubber ball” unable to make a decision, never choosing just one direction. She wants a car of her own so that she doesn’t have to rely on her parents or her friends for a ride, and she wants her father to return her phone calls and to know the truth about him and Masha.

Things become even more complicated when each of her parents brings a date to Stella’s eighteenth birthday party. It’s not easy to fake politeness to Vince and Masha, or to refuse the pearl ring Max gives her as present. When pilfering a bottle of rum from the pantry seems like a good solution to all of this drama, what should have been a beautiful evening becomes a disaster.

Author Lara Zeises is a self-proclaimed dork and pop-culture junkie. She is the author of True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet, which was adapted into a Lifetime movie starring actress Valerie Bertinelli. Her other books include Bringing Up the Bones, Anyone But You, Contents Under Pressure and Rush Hour.
