*Tilly the Trickster* by Molly Shannon, illustrated by Ard Hoyt
Tilly the Trickster
by Molly Shannon, illustrated by Ard Hoyt
Ages 4+ 32 pages Abrams September 2011 Hardcover

Tilly is a bright-eyed, pony-tailed little girl to whom readers will be immediately drawn—not only because of her bubbly presence, but also because of her affinity for getting into trouble.

Some tricks are harmless, such as her getting dressed and pulling the covers over head to suggest to her mother she will be late for school. Others are a bit more problematic, such as her filling her brother’s crème-filled cookie with toothpaste, which ends up making him ill.

As we get to know Tilly we realize she does not limit her shenanigans to her family members. She engages in similar behavior at school, such as the time she tells her friends that they missed the bus, making them race to school on foot as she avoids the discomfort of a crowded bus.

Tilly the Trickster is a charming picture book. As I read it by myself one evening, I found myself often laughing out loud, wishing that I knew someone with a sense of humor comparable to Tilly.

However, after Tilly poked a small hole in her Dad’s paper cup, which results in water dripping down his chin and onto the floor, which results in the family dog sliding through the house, I decided that perhaps this is one of those instances where I should be grateful the characters only figuratively come to life.
