Too Pickley!
Too Purpley!
by Jean Reidy, illustrated by Genevieve Leloup
Grades PreK-2 32 pages Bloomsbury USA January 2010 Hardcover

Here’s a cute picture book following the decision-making process as a little fashion plate gets dressed in the morning for school. Everything her mother suggests is wrong. The outfits are either too fancy, too leathery, too taggy or baggy, too scratchy or stitchy, or too purpley or too polka-dotty.

A playful rhyme scheme complements the textile-driven text. Any parent who has had this type of clothing “discussion” will appreciate how the book unfolds. And, yes, the girl does finally find something to wear that suits her, but it sure takes a long time to sift through the possibilities!

If you play close attention to the small illustration on the final page of the book, you might wonder if this was a ploy so that a certain little girl would miss her school bus. But then, perhaps she’s on the bus on her way to school.
