Wake Up, Henry Rooster!
by Margriet Ruurs, illustrated by Sean Cassidy
Ages 4-8 32 pages Fitzhenry & Whiteside May 2006 Hardcover

Henry Rooster has a problem: he is just not a morning rooster. Unlike other roosters, he likes to stay up late, party with the other animals, and sleep well into the morning. His family members try to persuade him to wake up early, but he still stays up late, only to start his day well after the sun rises, the farmer’s awake, and the young children are rushed off to school.

When Henry’s father has to go to the Roosters’ Union Convention, he has no choice but to leave Henry in charge of crowing early each morning to alert everyone on the farm that it is time to start their day. This presents a problem for Henry - not because he is lazy, but because he is just not a morning rooster.

Despite being left in charge of providing a morning wake-up call to the entire farm, Henry cannot help but party late into each night. He does rise each morning, but only after being frantically awakened by his mother reminding him of his new responsibilities.

Of course, Henry’s mother cannot do the job for Henry since everyone knows that hens do not crow—not to mention the fact that she is exhausted early in the morning after putting in a full day of work laying eggs and looking after the chicks. Each day Henry tries to rise early, but he is rarely on time. Even when he does rise, he is only able to introduce the day with a less than enthusiastic cock-a-doodle-do.

It is only after Henry stays out very very very late one night that he comes up with an ideal solution. His new plan acknowledges that he is not a morning rooster but still enables those on the farm to be awakened by a boisterous and welcoming cock-a-doodle-do.

Wake Up, Henry Rooster, is a simply written and beautifully illustrated children’s book likely to appeal to children of all ages.
