Ages 5+ 32 pages Fitzhenry and Whiteside June 2012 Hardcover

A Walk in Pirate's Cove is a peaceful poem about two little boys and their toddler sister, taking discovery walks along the sea. The poem elicits a sense of tranquility with its simple rhyme, describing almost- meditative activities:
“We’ll drop some little pebbles down
To make soft rippling rings,
And listen to the marsh frogs croak
Their evening wonderings.”
Though the poem itself is often generalized and isn’t powerful on its own, the combination of evocative illustrations and poem work together to bring across the diversity and sensuality of the walks. The soft lines and muted earth tones that resemble Impressionist-style watercolor paintings in the illustrations contribute to the peace of the poem.

While the poem mentions some of the seaside discoveries, the front and back inner cover illustrations show children the details of things such as winding, twisted driftwood; the textured alien stones; pointy, white dragon’s teeth; and smooth-edged, translucent sea glass.

A Walk in Pirate's Cove takes the reader on a tranquil journey along the seaside. Recommended.
