10 Hungry Rabbits: Counting and Color Concepts
by Anita Lobel
Ages 1+ 24 pages Knopf February 2012 Hardcover

Caldecott Honor Book artist and National Book Award finalist Anita Lobel’s concept book for children teaches colors and numbers through a family of rabbits. Mama Rabbit needs vegetables for her soup pot, and the bunnies are off gathering one purple cabbage, two white onions, and so on from their vegetable patch.

Vibrant and stylized illustrations reminiscent of American folk art make this little book visually appealing. The gouache and watercolor portraits remind one forcefully that children’s first exposure to art is typically through picture books. The illustrations of the vegetables are appealing enough to perhaps make a veggie eater out of a picky toddler!
