Any child familiar with the classic song about ten little “somethings” sitting on a bed (and one falling off and bumping his head) will get a good laugh at this variation on that theme. In Ten Little Dinosaurs, author Pattie Schnetzler starts with ten dinosaurs bouncing on the bed, and true to the original song, has one bouncing off the bed and hitting his head. From there, she deviates from the usual routine, taking us to nine dinosaurs on a bike, eight dinosaurs munching on a moth, seven rafting down a river, six jumping off a peak, five playing in the street, four of them acting cool, three on a camp-out, two watching baseball, and one walking alone.
Each scenario includes a short rhyme that includes a dinosaur species (such as the ankylosaurus, supersaurus, or saurolophus) shouting something out and participating in a random adventure.
The book is fast-paced, rhymes, and includes animated illustrations that add to its charm. The two large wobbly green eyes that protrude from the cover and each dinosaur illustration throughout the book more than overcome the fact that the language includes some textual gibberish, the purpose of which is likely to keep the book from deviating from its established rhythmic meter.
