Searching for activities for young children that don’t involve a lot of time or materials? Jackie Silberg’s got an idea for you – zillions, really. In addition to the 500 games, songs, and learning activities featured in this book, Silberg has authored an array of other books for caregivers and teachers, including 125 Brain Games for Babies, Games to Play with Two Year Olds, and Learning Games: Exploring the Senses Through Play.
500 Five Minute Games divides Silberg’s ideas into categories: Active, Alphabet, Birthday, Color, Drama, and Language, to name a few. The activities are geared toward strengthening physical and intellectual skills, and each activity notes skills it is intended to enhance and/or concepts it is aiming to reinforce – from, math, memory, and observation to the concepts of hot and cold and growth, among others.
While seeing all the activities grouped under skill sections might make one think an awfully clinical view is used, the games are laid-back and fun and should be easy to enjoy for either one child or a group (group activities often can be tailored to use for one child). One very positive aspect of the activities is that they often center
on rhymes and songs, so beneficial for language development and memorization.
Home-schooling parents and teachers will also appreciate that the indices include weather, seasons, and a few calendar events, which can easily and quickly augment topical subjects and unit studies.
