Seven Hungry Babies
by Candace Fleming, illustrated by Eugene Yelchin
Ages 3-7 40 pages Atheneum March 2010 Hardcover

In the animal kingdom, keeping a hungry baby fed can be a full-time job. In this picture book that also offers limited counting practice, a mother bird discovers that meeting her seven little ones' demands for more food is an exhausting task.

Responding to the cries of "Feed us! Feed us!", Mama Bird is continually on the move, seeking insects and other tasty goodies to keep her brood happy. Although one of the little birds takes a nap after each group feeding, the food gathering seems to never end. Finally, all seven of the nest's inhabitants are snoozing, so it looks like Mama Bird can relax.

But as she finally tries to get some much needed rest, guess what she hears? "Peep! Peep! Peep!"

Seven hungry babies open their beaks wide and are ready for another round of feeding! Having had enough, Mama Bird chirps, "It's Daddy's turn to fly."

Cute illustrations make this story one youngsters will enjoy reading aloud. After a long day, parents will also be able to empathize with Mama Bird's plight. Sometimes it seems there's no rest for the weary after taking care of all a child's needs.
