In just 36 pages, this small book will take readers through the tomb of a queen, to view the pyramids, and to learn why they point up to the sky. They’ll see images of Egypt’s Nile River and many wall paintings, carvings and sculptures. Author Kelly Campbell Hinshaw, who has worked in the field of museum education for 15 years, also includes phonetics to help readers sound out difficult words. Readers will learn what kind of art the ancient Egyptians made, why gold was so revered, and how the world around them inspired their creations.
The Art Across the Ages series was eveloped to capture young readers' imaginations and creative spirits, showcasing glossy photographs of museum art. The series ranges from Beginning (Level 1) to Independent (Level 3), accomodating young readers of varied skill levels.
Unfortunately, the book's manufacture in China means that it comes with a high environmental cost because of shipping. There is no additional information regarding any eco-printing options employed, such as using vegetable inks, recycled content or carbon off-sets.
On the plus side, a durable slipcover protects this hardcover from wear and tear. The opening and closing pages are a beautiful turquoise; Traci Johnson and Kyle Spencer have designed Ancient Egypt an effective, attention-getting volume.
Kelly Campbell Hinshaw teaches art to preschoolers in San Franscisco, CA, and lives in Berkley with her family.
