The first thing you notice about Grandpa Has A Great Big Face is the breathtaking cover illustration, so rich and deep and real you might think you are looking at a photograph, albeit a very magical one. This utterly charming book, written by Warren Hanson, author of The Next Place, tells the simple story from a child’s point of view about why his grandpa is so much bigger than life, and so special.
Hanson uses few words to conjure big images, and the text is moving and heartwarming. With Mark Elliott’s amazingly realistic and gorgeously executed illustrations, you cannot help but feel it in your heart reading this book. Elliott is one of the best illustrators this reviewer has come across. His images are truly worth buying the book for, even more so if your child has a beloved Grandpa of his own.
This is a charming homage to those loving grandfathers everywhere that, in the eyes of a child, are big and bold and full of magic.
