About Penguins: A Guide for Children has been created by former elementary school teacher Cathryn Sill as part of her “About” series, for which she collaborates with her husband, wildlife artist John Sill.
Each double-page spread features simple, spare text about penguins on one page with realistic, beautiful illustrations of penguins on the opposite page. The images feature the different types of penguins so that a young reader can easily learn to tell a Royal Penguin apart from a Yellow-Eyed Penguin, for example.
The book showcases the range and diversity of penguins, which live in hot tropical islands such as the Galapagos as easily as they do in the icy Antarctic, exhibiting several adaptations suitable to each environment. Some penguins build their nests in cracks in rocks or in caves, while others dig burrows in the ground, and others make do with no nests at all.
This is a nicely executed field guide to penguins for preschoolers; adults will come away having learned a lot from it as well. This is a great book choice for a child who loves penguins and wants to learn more about them.
