Best known for his work in textile design, Alexander Girard might appear as an odd choice for the subject of a children’s board book. He is not a fuzzy animal, and he has been dead for almost 20 years.
Designed and written by Gloria Fowler, Alexander Girard: Color uses striking images and a bold palette to take a little trip through colors and shapes.
The book is full of compelling images that parents will enjoy if they are predisposed to current trends in graphic design, which Girard has influenced. Kids will love the slightly distorted but brightly colored figures.
Intriguing patterns, shapes, flowers, animals, font type and surreal images leap from each page. Simply a beautiful little board book that parent and child can enjoy together.
The book’s construction leaves a touch to be desired, though. The wonderful colors pop brilliantly off the white backgrounds, but those white backgrounds won’t hold up well under the wear and tear of a toddler.
