Grades PreK-1 32 pages Greenwillow Books November 2014 Paperback

The lovable Amelia Bedelia is up to her old tricks in Amelia Bedelia's First Valentine. This story is packed with the classic “literal word interpretations” that have made the books in this series fan-favorites for so many young readers for decades.

When the bus driver suggests that Amelia is holding up the bus, she is quick to point out that the bus is too heavy for her lift. When Amelia’s classmate innocently asks for punch, referring to the sweet drink being served at the party, she does not hesitate to respond to his request with a gentle but clenched fist. And, true to the categorization of the book as Valentine’s Day-themed, Amelia’s father gives her a heart-inspired piece of jewelry that prevents her from wearing her heart on her sleeve.

Every once in a while I will hear a young child interpret a phrase literally and smile, wondering if those uttered words would ever make their way onto the pages of an Amelia Bedelia book. This is because since I started to read these books years ago, I would often wonder whether the author would run out of words for Amelia to say. I am pleased to report that, after reading Amelia Bedelia's First Valentine, the answer is that, at least for now, he certainly has not.
