Animal Soup (A Mixed-Up Animal Flap Book)

Baby-PreK 14 pages Golden Books May 2010 Board book

What would you get if you combined a critter that had wings with another that walked very slowly? A birdle (bird + turtle), of course, complete with googly eyes and a shell with feathers sprouting from it!

This supremely silly picture book has vivid, engaging portraits of two different animals on facing pages with brief, one-line descriptions of each (“WHAT WOULD I BE if I were pink from head to toe…”). The reader lifts a flap to see what ridiculous animal would result from combining the two animals previously described. The artwork featuring bug-eyed, comical critters is cute and eye-catching.

While the book has no real educational value, toddlers and preschoolers will delight in the silly animal mix-ups portrayed here, resulting in such absurdities as a flamonkey (flamingo + monkey) and a gorillacan (gorilla + pelican). Sure to be a hit with two- and three-year-olds.
