What’s That Sound? At the Circus is the perfect little board book. Its size is comfortable and accessible for hands of all sizes, and its bold colors are attractive and inviting. The story includes sights and sounds that captivate even the shortest of attention spans.
The book begins as the big circus trucks RUMBLE into town. As you enter the circus tent, you can hear all the sounds of the circus: the ringmaster CRIES out, the elephants THUNDER, and then of course there are the clowns! Dancing poodles on bikes that SQUEAK, high-flying acrobats, and ROARING tigers. There are sounds of the crowd’s CHEERS, WHISTLES and CLAPS as they hesitate to go. And then, best of all, the quiet little message as the children are being pulled home in a wagon at the end: “Hey, listen! What have you found? A ride that says I love you without a sound.”
With vibrant pictures that appear to yell out with sound, children are able to associate the sounds with the activities they see. The horse’s hooves are heard POUNDING as the picture details a horse reared up in movement. Words associated with sound appear to vibrate and are highlighted with color and large letters of varying shape. This not only helps the reader to remember to emphasize these VIBRANT sounds, but also serves learning readers to recognize and identify these words.
What’s That Sound? At the Circus will quickly become a beloved favorite. The good news is there are three more in the series (In the City, On the Farm, By the Sea) and hopefully many more to come.
