Ages Birth-2 10 pages Random House May 2012 Board book

Babies love looking at pictures of other babies. Mallory Loehr’s new board book, Baby Faces, takes this developmental stage to a new level by introducing movement into “baby faces.” This colorful and sturdy board book has lots of moving parts that little fingers can easily manipulate.

The simple format of this book will definitely appeal to the youngest readers, who love repetition in both text and illustrations. In fact, very young children will sit through several “readings” of board books—and enjoy each and every one.

The cover shows three of the five babies whose faces appear in the book. As soon as readers turn to the first page, they discover that each baby face can be manipulated by a simple pull tab.

The first baby has eyes that “wink and blink.” Other babies also do fascinating things, like showing their tongues, moving their hair in the wind, chewing, and even sneezing!

The illustrations are straightforward yet colorful images of faces. The background is simple so that the readers will concentrate on the action that each baby face performs with the pull tab. Very young readers will enjoy the interactivity in this board book.

Mallory Loehr has written several books for young children, including an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland as well as books in the Step into Reading and the Stepping Stones series. She is the editor in chief of Random House Children's Books and editor of the bestselling Magic Tree House series.

Baby Faces provides caregivers with a gently rhyming text and flip-page format which allows for lots of conversation and interaction between the text, the reader and the listener. The text will encourage even the youngest readers to actively participate in the reading process as they pull the tabs on each page and enjoy the movement of the appealing “baby faces.”
