The Penguin has opened up an exhibit of animals that includes a snowy owl, wolves, foxes, polar bears, and missing business owners!
Batman and Robin use the Batcomputer in Wayne Manor to investigate the name Tim Wiseman. Batman tells Robin, “Something tells me he’s a real night owl.” They must confront The Penguin if they want to free the caged business owners, but Circe the sorceress uses spells to transform the Dynamic Duo into animals themselves.
The Penguin is partnering with Circe so they can control the underworld and business world, but with Zatanna (the Master of Magic) on Batman and Robin’s side, the superheroes are able to defeat the villains and release the missing business owners.
This early reader comic book has many of the features one would expect from a Batman comic: sound effects, humorous banter, and fantastic costumes and action sequences. The two-page introduction to the five main characters in the story are divided into villains and heroes. Yellow boxes highlight the blocks of text when it appears against a dark background.
I wouldn’t read this book as part of a storytime to a big group of children because of the comic book-style layout; it would read best as a one on one storybook or alone by an independent reader. And although there are other Batman books in this format by Harper, this book can be read as a stand-alone.
